Do You Want To Help Eliminate Blackboard?

The Summer of Code application process is underway. Along with some good folks at The Oregon State Open Source Labs, we have put together a proposal to share content between Moodle and Drupal.

In combination with the recently developed functionality to author and export content from Drupal in IMS LOM format, you could author courses in Drupal or Moodle, and use those courses interchangeably in Drupal, Moodle, or any other LMS that imported IMS LOM.

The IMS code, and a detailed writeup, is freely available.

The Summer of Code is open to all college students. If you're interested, apply.

Drupal

Can anyone cite examples of schools that use Drupal as a primary or secondary LMS?

Drupal as LMS implies that the LMS is the highest goal

Drupal can be used to replicate many of the features of proprietary LMS's, but if that's *all* you want then Drupal might not be the best fit for you.

For example, Drupal currently lacks a gradebook, so if grading is your first priority, then Drupal wouldn't align with your needs.

However, I don't actually think I'm exaggerating when I say that there are countless examples of schools/programs using Drupal as a primary component within their learning infrastructure.

For a case study of how Drupal has been used at Amherst, see http://groups.drupal.org/node/10231

For a list of (mostly) higher ed Drupal sites, see http://groups.drupal.org/node/8136

For a use case that goes way beyond what you can do with an LMS, see http://groups.drupal.org/node/8610

For an overview/writeup of how one organization created a Learning Repository with Drupal, see http://groups.drupal.org/node/9926

There are also numerous instances of Drupal being used within K12, and a number of these installs are based on the DrupalEd profile. One example: http://sp.glenview34.org/ -- other example are given in this thread: http://groups.drupal.org/node/9447

Additionally, we have set up learning environments for several clients. Out of respect for their privacy, I'm not going to post links to their sites, but if you have specific questions, feel free to ping back via the contact form.
